The Mexico Immigration Form

Planning to travel to Mexico but you are confused about what kind of visa you need? No worries! Mexico has very easy visa rules. You probably won’t even need a visa.

Most people visiting Mexico can enter the country on an FMM, a Forma Migratoria Multiple.
This is a visitor’s pass that equals what other countries would call a visa.

The FMM which you can fill out online. Before entering the country is validated by the immigration officer at the border. There are 2 types of FMM, those traveling by land and those flying into the country. The link to the government website where you can fill out the original and up-to-date form is at the end of the article.

FMM for Mexico

the immigration officer will grant you up to 180 days in Mexico and hand you back the lower part of the immigration form

When arriving and going to the border control, you hand over your valid passport and your form, The immigration officer will stamp the lower part of the form and hand it back to you. It will allow you a stay of the exact amount of days the officer fills in on the form, usually, that is 180 days. (NOTE: NOT 6 months, but 180 days!!)

Keep your part of the visitor’s pass in a safe place, f.e. with your passport because you will need it when you have to identify yourself or leave the country by air.

When departing from Mexico by air you hand over this pass when you check-in for your flight. Without this, you cannot check in.

PLEASE NOTE: From April 1, 2021, onward the State of Quintana Roo implemented the VISITAX!! Please Read: April 1 2021, a visa tax for Mexico needs to be paid

When you lose it, you have to get a new one at the nearest immigration office or before your flight departs at the airport. It takes a lot of time to process a new FMM and you have to pay a fine for losing it. Make sure you are on time and will not miss your flight.
